Chapter Twelve

My heart was beating at a regular pace as I followed the directions to Brad’s home. My hands weren’t clammy. I could think clearly.

Maybe, I’d finally gotten a handle on my emotions.

I cleared my throat and listened to my phone telling me where to turn, and I couldn’t help but notice the homes were getting larger and closer to the lake.

As I made the last turn, I saw a sprawling house with a massive green lawn surrounding it. Once, I saw the address on the brick lamp posts at the end of the driveway, I realized this was Brad’s house.

“Maybe I should be teaching poetry instead of pottery,” I mumbled under my breath.

The home was beautiful with rustic touches adorning the façade like exposed beams surrounding the porch and cedar shakes along the peaks of the roofline.

When I turned down the drive, I saw a glimpse of the lake and realized when he meant he had a house at the lake, it was literally on the lake. I parked in front of the garage, and that was when a hidden jumble of emotions hit me.

In an instant, I became a hot mess. I closed my eyes with my hands still on the wheel and did a couple of centering deep breaths before blinking my eyes open from the feeling of being watched.

I craned my neck and saw a blond, little person resembling Brad peeking out from behind a curtain in one of the large windows. I smiled and waved, and it looked like he burst into laughter and closed the curtain before quickly looking out again.

Seeing Hunter study me made butterflies erupt in my belly. I wanted him to like me so badly, but I didn’t want to make a mistake.

Say the wrong thing.

Do the wrong thing.

By the time I reached the front door, I was ready to turn around and go back home. My nerves were one giant ball of frayed emotions, and I felt like I was in over my head.

I raised my knuckles to the giant wooden door and tapped gently at first and louder as I got braver.

“Hello?” A tiny voice echoed through the door. “Who is it?”

“It’s Winter,” I called back, unsure of whether or not I’d make it through this line of questioning.

“No, it’s summer.”

I hid a chuckle. “No, I’m Winter, and I’m here to come with you guys to see the emus.”

A few seconds of silence hung in the air, which only made me far more nervous than I should have been with a three-year-old dictating my future.

“Hello?” I asked softly.

“Who is this?” Hunter questioned again.

Before I answered, I shook my head and smiled. “It’s summer.”

“I thought you were Winter,” he shot back, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I am, but—”

“Hey there, buddy.” Brad’s voice came through the door like a victorious melody. “Are you giving our guest trouble?”

“No, dadda.” He laughed. “But she thinks she’s winter and it’s summer.”

Brad laughed. “I have a secret.”

I heard Hunter shout a whisper. “What’s the secret?”

“She’s right.
